After 12 years of renting, Larry Butler and his wife, Judit Szaloki, were finally ready to make the leap into home ownership. They found a house they liked, arranged financing, and sealed the deal, thinking their dream had come true.

Their euphoria was short-lived. On a visit two days after the closing, they discovered the house was infested with mold. Two of their daughters have asthma, and one ended up in the emergency room.

The family now faces financial ruin as they struggle to cover rent on their old house, the $1,600/month mortgage on their new house– and a clean-up bill estimated at $30,000.

“This is our first house,” says Butler, “and it’s a nightmare.”

The Butler’s story is no isolated incident.

Hidden mold is present in an estimated 50% of homes in America, and with statistics like that, you can’t afford to let your home go unchecked.

For the last three years I’ve been stressing the importance of doing a regular inspection of your home to find any hidden mold problems, before they get out of hand.

The simple truth is, it’s not hard to avoid the black mold nightmare, IF you know what to look for.

Unfortunately, most people don’t recognize the warning signs when they se em.

Here’s a few things to keep an eye on:

1. Cabinets – if a kitchen or bathroom sink begins leaking, it can go unnoticed for long periods of time, causing extensive mold growth. Be sure to look under cabinets regularly and check for trapped moisture. If you store a lot of cleaning supplies and other products under the cabinet, be sure to move them so you can do a thorough inspection.

2. Baseboards – if a water line inside a wall cavity begins leaking, this too could go unnoticed for a long period of time. That’s why it’s important to regularly inspect the baseboards in your home for watermarks and dampness.

3. Washing Machines – When a washing machine hose bursts, most people’s initial reaction is to clean up all the visible water. Problem is, the water you see is just the tip of the iceberg. This water will make it’ way into areas of your home that aren’t visibly noticed and cause serious damage to carpeting, padding, subfloors, etc. And left unchecked, the trapped moisture will cause hidden mold growth in your home.

By taking the time to do an inspection of your home, you’ll be able to locate a potential problem before it gets out of hand.
